Your Health and Technology: The Positives and Negatives

Technology is something you probably use every day, you’re even using it right now to read this article! However, what is this high use of technology doing to your health? Let’s look into the good and bad of technology’s impact on your health.

Positive: Fast Medical Help
Many people like to take advantage of talking with a doctor via video chat rather than going into a clinic or urgent care. An article on Panama Jack states, “‘Telemedicine’ can be used to refer to a type of two-way video call for consultation, or the transmission and healthcare data and information.” This use of technology makes it much easier and quicker to get answers to simple medical questions. This saves time, money, and allows you to stay in the comfort of your home.

Positive: Opportunities to Learn
Technology is heavily used in the classroom for people of all ages. Scott Stuber on West Bend Cares Blog states, “With increased collaboration in the classroom, teachers and students have increased creativity and project-based learning opportunities that make academic instruction more meaningful.” This hands-on learning allows many people to better be able to understand and grasp the concepts being taught.

Negative: Mental Health
Spending large amounts of time on technology can actually decrease your mental health. According to an article on Blogger, technology can increase anxiety, cause feelings of loneliness, and make it hard to focus or remember things. This is because you can become addicted to using it which can push you away from people and other things in life.

Negative: Eyesight
Staring at computer screens, phones, and other electronic devices is not good for your eyes. According to Everyday Health, “Close computer work can cause light sensitivity, dry eye, blurred vision, double vision, fatigue and headache.” When looking at screens, you tend to not blink as often which can dry out the eyes and cause more strain which leads to these things like headaches, blurry eyes, and more.

As you can see, there are both positive and negative impacts of technology on our health. While technology is very useful in helping us with work, education, and life, it can be harming your health also. Make sure to take frequent breaks from staring at the computer to help combat these issues. Think of all the ways that technology is helping you or harming you and see what changes you can make!
